The timing depends on the texture you want. Pouring cool or lukewarm syrup over freshly baked, hot kadayif generally helps preserve more of its crisp, shredded texture.
Spread the butter or fat evenly and avoid compressing the pastry too firmly into the pan. Use only enough syrup to moisten it, and do not store it tightly covered while it is still warm.
Undercooking, too much syrup, or packing the strands too tightly can make it soft and heavy. Bake until the surface and base are clearly golden before adding syrup.
Baked tel kadayif without syrup can be frozen once fully cooled in an airtight container. Syrup-soaked kadayif can also be frozen, but it usually loses much of its crispness after thawing.
Syrup-soaked tel kadayif has its best texture on the day it is made and can be kept refrigerated in a covered container for a few days. Brief reheating may improve it slightly, but will not fully restore its original crunch.
Tel kadayif is made from fine shredded pastry strands, while baklava is built from layers of phyllo dough. Kadayif is more thread-like and crunchy on the surface, whereas baklava is flaky and layered.
Pistachios, walnuts, and hazelnuts are classic choices. Their toasted flavor complements the sweet syrup and adds a more satisfying contrast in texture.
Unsweetened Turkish coffee, tea, or a plain espresso can balance its rich sweetness. Sparkling water is another refreshing option that does not add extra sweetness.
Because syrup-soaked tel kadayif is rich in rapidly digested carbohydrates, it may feel heavy just before vigorous exercise. If eaten occasionally after training, pairing it with a protein-containing food such as yogurt or milk can make the snack more balanced.
People with coeliac disease or medically diagnosed gluten-related disorders should avoid it because it contains gluten. It is also commonly made with tree nuts, so anyone with a tree-nut allergy should check ingredients and possible cross-contact carefully.
