Preheat the toastie maker or pan and use only a light coating of fat on the outside of the bread. Medium heat lets the cheese melt while the bread becomes crisp without burning.
Packaged, heat-treated salami is usually ready to eat, and heating it in the toastie is mainly for flavour and texture. If using a raw meat product instead, cook it separately until safely done.
Both salami and cheese release fat as they heat, especially when the filling is overpacked. Using thinner salami slices, a moderate amount of cheese, and a fully heated press helps prevent a soggy result.
Tomatoes, rocket, peppers, or plain ayran make fresh accompaniments that balance the rich, salty filling. Adding vegetables also makes the meal more varied and filling.
A rich, cheesy toastie may feel heavy if eaten immediately before exercise. It is usually more comfortable a few hours beforehand, or in a smaller portion if training is sooner.
Eating it at night is not inherently harmful, but a fatty or spicy toastie close to bedtime can worsen reflux in some people. If that happens, have a smaller serving earlier in the evening.
It can fit into an overall balanced diet occasionally, but processed meats are generally best kept as an occasional choice because they are often high in salt and saturated fat. Rotate with less processed protein choices and include vegetables regularly.
One toastie does not cause cancer. However, frequent high intake of processed meat is linked with health risks, so salami is best not used as an everyday main protein source.
It is best eaten fresh. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours and, for best food safety, eat them the next day after reheating thoroughly; do not leave them at room temperature for long.
You can freeze it assembled but unheated, although the bread and cheese may change texture after thawing. Wrap it airtight, thaw it in the refrigerator, and heat it thoroughly before eating.
