Hot milk can be part of a calming bedtime routine. If you have reflux or lactose intolerance, drinking it immediately before lying down may cause discomfort.
Warm milk may temporarily soothe a dry or irritated throat, but it does not treat an infection. It can feel like it creates more mucus for some people, though it does not actually increase mucus production.
Brief home heating does not meaningfully reduce the amount of protein in milk. Prolonged high heat can reduce some heat-sensitive vitamins and alter the flavour.
Warm milk over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it is steaming and small bubbles appear around the edge rather than allowing it to boil over. In a microwave, heat in short intervals and stir between each interval.
A thin skin forms when milk proteins and fat concentrate at the surface during heating. It is normal and is not a sign of spoilage when the milk smells and has been stored properly.
Add honey after the milk has cooled to a comfortably warm drinking temperature for the best flavour. Never give honey to children under 12 months old.
Hot milk softens coffee’s bitterness and creates a smoother, creamier drink. People sensitive to caffeine may prefer to avoid milk coffee later in the day.
Some people find warm milk soothing because of its mild flavour and texture. Others, especially those with reflux, may find that it worsens symptoms, particularly in large amounts or close to bedtime.
Heated milk should not be left at room temperature for long. Cool leftovers promptly and refrigerate them, but avoid repeatedly reheating the same milk for both quality and food-safety reasons.
Heating milk does not remove lactose, so it can still trigger symptoms in people with lactose intolerance. Lactose-free milk or a suitable plant-based alternative may be easier to tolerate.
