An unopened tub can be kept until its use-by date when stored consistently frozen. Once opened, keep the lid tightly closed and use it reasonably soon to limit ice crystals and flavour loss.
It is not recommended to refreeze ice cream that has fully melted, both for food safety and texture reasons. If it has only softened slightly, its temperature history matters, but repeatedly melting and refreezing it should be avoided.
Close the container promptly after scooping and avoid leaving it out while serving. Store it toward the back of the freezer rather than in the door, where temperatures fluctuate more.
Gelato is typically churned with less air and often made with less fat, giving it a denser texture and a softer serving temperature. Classic ice cream is usually more aerated, firmer when frozen, and richer in mouthfeel.
Ice cream does not cause colds; viral infections do. Its cold temperature may temporarily irritate a sensitive throat or make discomfort more noticeable for some people.
Serve it with fresh fruit, plain yogurt, or a small handful of nuts for contrasting texture and a more satisfying dessert. Fruit also adds acidity that can balance the sweetness of ice cream.
It can be enjoyed occasionally, but it is not an ideal recovery food on its own. For post-exercise recovery, include a source of protein and nourishing carbohydrates, such as dairy or a balanced meal with fruit.
Ice cream does not automatically disrupt sleep, but a large serving close to bedtime may worsen reflux or indigestion in susceptible people. If you want it at night, a smaller portion earlier in the evening is usually easier to tolerate.
Because classic ice cream contains dairy, it may trigger bloating, gas, or diarrhoea in people with lactose intolerance. Individual tolerance varies, and lactose-free frozen desserts may be a more comfortable option.
Being processed does not make a food automatically off-limits, but classic ice cream may contain added sugars, flavourings, and stabilisers. It is best treated as an occasional dessert rather than a staple food.
