Its cold, fizzy sensation can feel refreshing briefly, but it is not a good substitute for water. Water should remain the main drink in hot weather and after exercise.
Before exercise, carbonation may cause bloating or stomach discomfort, and it is not an ideal recovery drink afterward. During prolonged intense activity, sports products can have specific uses, but cola is not a balanced replacement for them.
Most colas contain caffeine, which can delay sleep onset or make sleep lighter in some people. If you are sensitive to caffeine, choose caffeine-free drinks later in the day.
Its sugar helps oral bacteria produce acid, while the drink's own acidity can contribute to enamel erosion. Sipping it frequently extends the time teeth are exposed to acid.
Brushing straight away may be harsh on enamel that has been temporarily softened by acid. Rinse with water and wait about 30 minutes before brushing.
Carbonated drinks can increase stomach pressure and trigger belching, bloating, or reflux symptoms. People with reflux may do better limiting it, especially close to bedtime.
Even when tightly capped and refrigerated, it loses carbonation fairly quickly after opening. For the best taste and fizz, drink it the same day, ideally within a few hours.
Freezing is not recommended because the liquid expands and can crack or burst a can or bottle. Once thawed, its fizz and flavour may also change noticeably.
If both drinks contain caffeine, your total caffeine intake rises. In sensitive people, this can contribute to jitters, palpitations, anxiety, or sleep disruption.
The idea that cola cures an upset stomach is common, but it is not strongly supported by evidence. Its carbonation and sugar can worsen nausea or diarrhoea for some people, so water and appropriate rehydration fluids are usually better choices.
