It has no added sugar; its sweet taste comes from high-intensity sweeteners rather than sugar. It is therefore different from a sugar-sweetened energy drink, while still providing a sweet flavour.
It is formulated with ingredients such as sweeteners, flavourings, acidity regulators, caffeine and other functional additives. This type of industrial formulation is why it is classified as an ultra-processed drink.
It can be an alternative source of caffeine, but it is not nutritionally or compositionally the same as coffee. Factor it into your total caffeine intake from coffee, tea, cola, pre-workout products and other energy drinks.
For adults who tolerate caffeine, having it around 30 to 60 minutes before training may improve alertness and perceived energy. Avoid using it late in the day if caffeine affects your sleep.
It contributes fluid, but it should not be your main hydration drink. Water remains the best everyday choice, especially because energy drinks contain caffeine and acids.
Some people experience nausea, reflux, jitters or a racing heartbeat when they have caffeinated, acidic drinks without food. If that happens, have it with or after a meal instead.
Yes. Caffeine can delay sleep onset and reduce sleep quality, particularly when consumed later in the day. Individual sensitivity varies, so leave several hours between an energy drink and bedtime.
Mixing energy drinks with alcohol is not recommended. Caffeine can mask feelings of intoxication, which may make it easier to drink more alcohol than intended.
Children, pregnant or breastfeeding people, those sensitive to caffeine, and people with heart rhythm problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure or anxiety should be particularly careful. Anyone taking caffeine-containing medicines or supplements should consider their total intake.
Being sugar-free does not make it an ideal everyday staple: it is still ultra-processed, and regular caffeine use can affect sleep, anxiety or caffeine tolerance in some people. Treat it as an occasional drink and make water and minimally processed drinks your usual choices.
