The main difference is the small amount of added sugar used to soften the taste. Black coffee has more pronounced bitter and roasted notes, while low-sugar coffee tastes milder.
If you tolerate caffeine well, it can fit into the morning or before exercise. To protect sleep, it is generally sensible to limit caffeine around 6–8 hours before bedtime.
Caffeine may support focus and exercise performance for some people. Start with a small cup if you are unsure how you respond, especially if coffee can cause nausea, jitters, or a racing heartbeat.
For some people, coffee on an empty stomach can worsen nausea, heartburn, or reflux symptoms. Having it with a light meal may feel more comfortable if this happens to you.
Coffee can have a mild diuretic effect, but normal intake does not usually cause meaningful dehydration in regular coffee drinkers. It should still complement, rather than replace, water intake.
Milk or an unsweetened plant drink can make coffee less bitter and give it a creamier texture. Check flavoured products carefully, as they may add more sugar than expected.
Compounds in coffee can reduce the absorption of iron, particularly iron from plant foods. If you have low iron levels, avoid drinking coffee at the same time as iron supplements or iron-rich meals.
Caffeine can cause a temporary rise in blood pressure, especially in people who do not consume it regularly. Those with hypertension, heart rhythm issues, or caffeine sensitivity should discuss intake with a healthcare professional.
Brewed coffee can usually be kept in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 1–2 days, although its flavour declines quickly. Coffee with milk is best consumed fresh rather than stored.
Coffee is not a fat-burning drink on its own. Caffeine may briefly affect energy expenditure and workout motivation, but lasting fat loss depends on overall eating habits and physical activity.
