A long-pull espresso runs more water through the coffee, producing a larger cup with a lighter body. If pushed too far, the later part of the extraction can taste bitter or drying.
As extraction continues, pleasant flavors are followed by harsher and more astringent compounds. This is more noticeable when the grind is too fine or the shot is stretched too long.
Often it can extract somewhat more caffeine because water stays in contact with the grounds longer. The exact amount still depends on the beans, dose, and brewing settings.
Not for everyone; some people notice more stomach irritation, reflux, or jitters when they drink coffee without food. If you are sensitive, having it with a meal may feel better.
Many people use it before training for alertness and focus. If you are caffeine-sensitive or train late, it may interfere with sleep and indirectly affect recovery.
Milk softens bitterness and can make the drink feel gentler and easier to sip. It also changes the nutrition profile compared with plain coffee.
Dark chocolate, plain nuts, and light breakfast foods often complement its roasted notes without overwhelming them. Very sweet pastries can mask the coffee's more subtle flavors.
It is best soon after brewing for the fullest aroma and texture. As it sits, the crema fades and the flavor can become flatter or harsher.
Fresh espresso is best consumed right away. It can be chilled briefly for iced coffee uses, but it will not keep the same aroma as a freshly pulled shot.
The idea that coffee automatically dehydrates you is overstated. Caffeine may have a mild diuretic effect in some people, but coffee can still contribute to daily fluid intake.
