Cold temperatures can dull the perception of sweetness, so the same soda may taste less sweet over ice. As the ice melts, it also dilutes the drink and makes the flavor milder.
Its cold temperature may briefly numb throat discomfort, but soda does not treat a sore throat. Carbonation and acidity can worsen irritation or reflux in some people.
Some people find small sips of a fizzy drink comforting, but it is not a reliable treatment for nausea. Carbonation may increase bloating, and water or an appropriate oral rehydration drink is a better choice with vomiting or diarrhea.
Water is usually the better choice for replacing fluids lost through sweat. Iced soda may provide quick energy, but it contains no protein and is not enough on its own for recovery after hard or prolonged training.
If the soda contains caffeine, it may make it harder to fall asleep, especially for caffeine-sensitive people. Even caffeine-free soda can trigger nighttime reflux or stomach discomfort because of its carbonation and sugar.
Sugary, acidic sodas can contribute to enamel erosion and tooth decay. Have it with a meal rather than sipping it for a long time, drink water afterward, and avoid brushing immediately after.
Ice does not remove any sugar from the soda; it only dilutes the drink as it melts. If you drink the same amount of soda, your total sugar intake is unchanged.
When tightly capped and refrigerated, opened soda usually keeps its best fizz for about 1 to 3 days. It gradually goes flat, which is usually a quality issue rather than a safety issue if it has been stored cleanly.
You can use the freezer for brief chilling, but do not forget the can or bottle inside. Freezing liquid expands and can crack or burst the container.
Water is the best everyday choice for thirst over both soda and fruit juice. Both are sweet drinks, while soda’s carbonation and acidity may also cause bloating for some people.
