An espresso macchiato is an espresso topped with a small amount of milk or milk foam, so the coffee flavour remains dominant. A latte macchiato contains much more milk and has a milder taste.
If you tolerate caffeine well, it can fit into the morning or early afternoon. Having it late in the day may make it harder for some people to fall asleep.
Its caffeine may support alertness and perceived exercise performance for some people. Avoid having it immediately before training if coffee causes reflux, stomach upset, jitters, or palpitations.
Coffee can trigger heartburn, nausea, or increased bowel activity in some people, especially when consumed without food. If this happens, try having it after a small meal or snack.
Whole milk usually creates a richer, smoother foam, while lower-fat milk gives a lighter result. Barista-style plant drinks can foam well too, although the traditional version uses dairy milk.
Over-roasted beans, stale coffee, water that is too hot, or over-extraction can all make espresso taste harsh. Fresh beans, an appropriate grind, and a properly pulled short espresso help keep the flavour balanced.
Fruit, plain yogurt, nuts, or a lightly sweetened breakfast item can complement its intense coffee flavour. Very sugary pastries can mask the coffee’s flavour and add substantial extra sugar.
For most regular coffee drinkers, moderate coffee intake does not cause meaningful dehydration. It is still sensible to drink water throughout the day rather than treating coffee as a replacement for fluids.
Caffeine intake should be limited during pregnancy, so consider the caffeine from all drinks and foods consumed that day. A clinician or midwife can provide advice tailored to your situation.
Because it contains dairy milk, it may cause bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort in people with lactose intolerance. Choosing lactose-free milk or ordering the espresso without milk foam can be practical alternatives.
