Caffeine sensitivity varies, but finishing espresso at least 6–8 hours before bedtime works well for many people. Those who are highly sensitive may need to have it earlier in the day.
Caffeine may support alertness and perceived exercise performance for some people when taken before training. Avoid having it on an empty stomach or immediately before exercise if it causes nausea, jitters, or palpitations.
For most healthy people, it has not been shown to cause lasting stomach damage, but coffee can trigger heartburn, nausea, or increased bowel activity in sensitive individuals. If this happens, have it with or after food instead.
Usual amounts of coffee do not appear to cause dehydration severe enough to offset fluid intake, especially in regular coffee drinkers. Espresso is not a replacement for water, so keep drinking fluids throughout the day.
Espresso is a small, concentrated coffee made quickly under pressure, while filter coffee is brewed with more water. Paper-filtered coffee also removes more of certain coffee oils than espresso does.
Water can cleanse the palate so the coffee’s flavor is easier to notice, and it may help relieve dry mouth afterward. It is often best to sip the water before or after rather than mixing it into the espresso.
Sugar raises the drink’s energy and carbohydrate content from the very low baseline of plain espresso. It does not cancel caffeine’s stimulant effect; it mainly changes the taste and nutritional profile.
Compounds in coffee can reduce absorption of non-heme iron, the type found in plant foods. People with iron deficiency or those taking iron supplements may wish to separate espresso from iron-rich meals and supplements by about 1–2 hours.
During pregnancy, total caffeine intake should be limited, counting caffeine from coffee, tea, energy drinks, chocolate, and other sources. A clinician or midwife can give advice tailored to the individual pregnancy.
Store beans in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry cupboard. Refrigeration is usually not ideal for frequently opened coffee because moisture and odors can affect the beans.
