Espresso is brewed quickly under pressure from finely ground coffee, giving it a concentrated flavour and fuller body. Filter coffee uses a longer brewing method and is often lighter in taste.
Caffeine sensitivity varies, but avoiding caffeinated coffee roughly 6–8 hours before bed may help reduce sleep disruption. People who are sensitive to caffeine may need an even earlier cutoff.
Caffeine may support alertness and exercise performance for some people. If it causes stomach upset, palpitations, or anxiety, use a smaller amount or avoid it before training.
For some people, coffee on an empty stomach can worsen reflux, heartburn, or nausea, although this is not universal. Having it with food or choosing a gentler drink may help if symptoms occur.
Coffee can have a mild diuretic effect, but moderate intake does not usually cause net dehydration in regular coffee drinkers. It should still complement, rather than replace, water intake.
Coffee compounds can reduce absorption of non-heme iron, the type found in plant foods. People with iron deficiency may benefit from having coffee at least 1–2 hours away from iron-rich meals or iron supplements.
Milk softens the flavour and adds nutrients and energy depending on the amount used. It does not eliminate caffeine’s stimulating effect, though it may make coffee feel gentler for some people.
Very dark roasting, over-extraction, an overly fine grind, or water that is too hot can create bitter or burnt notes. Adjusting the grind, extraction time, and equipment cleanliness can improve balance.
Plain espresso is best consumed immediately because its crema and aroma fade quickly. Milk-based drinks should not sit at room temperature and any leftovers should be refrigerated promptly rather than repeatedly reheated.
Pregnancy guidance generally recommends limiting total daily caffeine intake, and caffeine in espresso drinks varies with the number of shots and recipe. Consider caffeine from tea, chocolate, energy drinks, and other sources as well.
