An Americano is made by adding hot water to espresso, while filter coffee is brewed by passing water through ground coffee. Both are very low in calories when served plain, but their flavor, body, and caffeine content can differ by brew method.
Many people tolerate a moderate amount of coffee on an empty stomach. However, it may worsen heartburn, gastritis symptoms, nausea, or stomach irritation in sensitive people, so having it with food may be more comfortable.
Its caffeine may improve alertness and exercise performance for some people. Try it before training only if it suits you, and reduce the amount if it causes jitters, palpitations, or digestive discomfort.
It can. Caffeine may delay sleep onset and reduce sleep quality, especially in people who are sensitive to it; decaf is often a better later-day option.
In usual amounts, coffee contributes to fluid intake and does not generally cause meaningful dehydration. It should not replace drinking water throughout the day, however.
Milk can make the drink smoother and adds protein and other nutrients. It also changes the drink from plain Americano, with calories and carbohydrates depending on the type and amount of milk used.
Coffee compounds can reduce absorption of non-heme iron, the form found in plant foods. People with iron deficiency or those taking iron supplements may benefit from having coffee separately from iron-rich meals or supplements.
Caffeine can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure, particularly in people who do not consume it regularly. Those with hypertension, heart rhythm concerns, or caffeine sensitivity should tailor intake to their tolerance and clinical advice.
Bitterness may come from very dark roasting, over-extracted espresso, or overly hot water. Fresher beans, a better-balanced espresso shot, or slightly cooler water can produce a smoother cup.
It tastes best soon after preparation, since its aroma fades and bitterness can develop as it sits. If milk or cream has been added, do not leave it at room temperature for long; refrigerate leftovers promptly.
