Frequently Asked Questions About Pistachio

Are pistachios healthy?

Yes, pistachios are a nutrient-rich snack, providing protein, fibre and unsaturated fats. Choose plain or lightly salted ones when possible, and portion them into a bowl rather than eating straight from a large bag.

Do pistachios help with weight loss?

Pistachios can fit into a weight-loss eating pattern, but they do not cause weight loss on their own. Their protein and fibre can make a snack satisfying; measuring out a portion helps keep energy intake in check.

Why do pistachio shells split open?

A pistachio shell often splits naturally as the nut matures and expands inside it. A closed shell is not necessarily unsafe, but discard any nut that smells musty or tastes rancid, and avoid forcing shells open with your teeth.

How many pistachios should you eat a day?

About 28 grams, or one medium ounce, is a practical serving. The number of individual nuts varies with their size and whether they are shelled, so weighing or portioning them is more reliable than counting.

Are pistachios better raw or roasted?

Both raw and roasted pistachios are fine to eat. Roasting brings out their flavour, while dry-roasted, unsalted options avoid added oil and excess salt; if roasting them at home, use moderate heat and stop before they darken.

Can you eat pistachio shells?

No, the hard outer shells are not meant to be eaten; the kernel inside is the edible part. The thin skin around the kernel is edible too, so there is no need to remove it.

How should you store pistachios?

Store pistachios in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Heat and light can make their oils go rancid; refrigerate or freeze them if you want to keep them fresh for longer.

Can you freeze pistachios?

Yes, pistachios freeze well. Put them in a tightly sealed, freezer-safe container to protect them from moisture and odours, and take out only what you need rather than repeatedly thawing and refreezing the whole batch.

Are pistachios safe for dogs?

Pistachios are not a good treat for dogs. They are often salted, their shells can cause choking or digestive problems, and mouldy nuts may be dangerous; keep them out of reach and contact a vet if your dog eats a large amount.

Why are some pistachios green?

Pistachio kernels are naturally green because they contain chlorophyll and other plant pigments. The shade varies by variety and maturity, so a brighter green colour alone does not prove that the nuts are fresher or better.

What is Pistachio?

Dağ fıstığı is the oily fruit of the wild terebinth tree, also known in Turkey as menengiç. It is related to the cultivated pistachio but is a different plant, gathered especially in southeastern Anatolia. The fruit is often roasted and ground for menengiç coffee, and can also be eaten roasted or made into a paste.

Its flavour is earthy and resinous, with a rich, oily texture. Menengiç coffee is commonly prepared with milk and served when hosting guests or at a relaxed tea-time. Dağ fıstığı provides fats, protein and fibre, so a little can add plenty of flavour. For a lighter drink, use less milk or serve it without sweet additions.
